"A few years ago I met a young Mexican soldier manning a check point while searching vehicles for firearms. We struck a conversation and he told me the drug war is NOT a drug war. It is a civil war between Mexicans who believe in violence --as a way of life -- and those who still believe in the rule of law, flawed though it may be. It was a war between right and wrong. I asked him who thought would win this war. He looked at me with the oldest eyes I'd seen on a 19 year old boy and said, "Senor, I am a son of Mexico." That was all I needed to hear. I don't believe in divine intervention, but if there are gods, I hope they keep this young man safe."
