Apple May Fade Away

Bob Endefle has an article on CIO.com about Apple and why he thinks it has no chance of being around for 100 years like IBM. His reasons:
  • The 90s miracle companies like SGI, Netscape, AOL, CompuServe, Novell, Microsoft, Sun, Banyan, Digital and Compaq fizzled. Apple may be next.
  • Huge CEO salaries and forced ranking (employee report cards that compare them against each other as if they were opponents) make it hard for companies to grow and evolve.
  • IBM created a huge, cult-like family. New tech firms like Apple have not done so.
  • Today’s employees lack loyalty because executives seek to maximize short term stock price rather than building an organization that assures employee pensions in the long run. The modern CEO also sells his stock when he leaves.
