Overnight Success Targeted For Threats

Young Teen Video Received 100 Million Internet Hits
A fourteen year old singer, Rebecca Black, is featured on an internet video singing a song, "Friday." The video has achieved over 100 million hits on YouTube.

Rebecca’s schoolmates are not amused or impressed. In fact, the young singer has been pulled from the school by her mother because of bullying. . "When I walk by, they'll start singing 'Friday' in a really nasally voice," she told ABC during an interview broadcast on Wednesday. "Or, you know, they'll be like, 'Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?'"

Some of the online threats to her have been violent. There have even been death threats. The FBI has been called in. Black herself has been calm about the animosity. "I've had a lot of experience with not being liked and all that," she tells ABC. "I think if I hadn't had to deal with that in the past, then I totally would have handled this differently and I would have gone down in burning flames. But I've learned that you just can't let it get to you."

Rebecca now travels surrounded by fans. Her entourage includes a publicist, manager, stylist and bodyguard. Her new, "My Moment" follow-on video has had 22 million hits in the last three weeks. She performed "Friday" at Katy Perry’s concert and appeared in Katy’s last video. Lady Gaga is one of Rebecca’s fans. She’s only made enough money to cover college tuition, but her professional expenses are growing along with her fame. She may be able to harness the power of her haters to her own advantage.

Afterword: The link immediately above also shows thousands of comments from young readers. At least half of the remarks and votes are negative toward Rebecca Black.

Is it too much to suggest that our instant-entertainment video culture nurtures and encourages resentment? Has such resentment become the street religion of America for this century?
