Negative Quiddity: Don't Allow Saudi Women to Drive

The Associated Press reports that a high-level advisory group reported to the Saudi government that permitting women to drive automobiles in the kmingdom could encourage premarital sex. A rights activist, Waleed Abu Alkhair , reported this to the international press. The report intimates that allowing woen to drive would permit a greater mixing of genders that might promote sex.

The AP reports, "Saudi women have staged several protests defying the driving ban. The king has already promised some reforms, including allowing women to vote in municipal elections in 2015."

Social media website were awash with speculation that Saudi clerics and other traditionalists will fight against any social changes. The Saudi government maintains Islam’s holiest sites and follows Wahhabism, a strict form of Islam. The new crown pruince, Nayef, has served as interior minister and appears to hold traditionalist views. AP reports that Nayef’s selection may have emboldened traditionalists about Saudi social policies.

This is another splendid example of using public institutions to perfect society. It’s hard to wish the traditionalists well in their fight to maintain purity and virginity through social engineering.
