Rick's Cafe Actually Existed

Lisbon was espionage central during World War II – everyone of any significance from any important intelligence operation, worldwide, was posted there at one time or another – from British double-agents such as Kim Philby to Ian Fleming to a German agent who spent all his account money and faked his reports to Berlin (!).

"Rick’s Café Americain" in the movie Casablanca is a New York play writer’s ingenious guess of what what going on, itself fictionally located the other end of an air flight route (Casablanca instead of Lisbon).  The famous movie was a filmed version of a wartime propaganda play, "Everyone Comes to Rick’s."

FDR watched Casablanca at the White House for 43 consecutive nights in 1943.

which discusses the deposed European aristocracy that spent the war in Lisbon. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor (the former Edward VIII) was there briefly. It was rumored that he was going to make a deal with the Nazis and was bought off by being made governor of the Bahamas for the duration of the war!

The actual spy bar to end all twentieth century spy bars is probably located in the immediate Rossio Square area described in the link above. Particularly, the Mundial hotel rooftop bar might be the ultimate spy spot of all.
