Legality of Copying Music and Movies

Brian Goodrich of easybridge.com has looked at the legality of making copies of music and movies. Here’s what he found out:
  • If you copy media and try to resell it, you are in trouble legally.
  • Selling your CDs while keeping the backup it technically ilegal. It’s safer to delete any digital copies before selling the original physical version of the media.
  • Purchasing a CD, burning the music and then returning the CD is illegal.
  • Copying movies is illegal.
  • Copying music to a cloud is legal unless it violates the terms of use agreement of the cloud service.
  • It is normally legal to copy music to your computer as a backup precaution.
  • Should you copy music to your computer and then transfer it to a portable music device, you’ve crossed the line unless you originally purchased the music.
  • ITunes says customers can "make as many custom CDs asyou lik," but use of them is limited to personal, noncommercial usage.
