This blog has little to do with product endorsement, but there is a very competent and well-thought-out mechanical pencil out there at a reasonable price. I use it every day. It’s easy to advance the lead, easy to replace spare lead into the barrel, it has balance and a soft touch, the eraser lasts and can be maneuvered precisely, and it is reliable.
The Pentel Side FXZ 0.5 PD 255 is the best mechanical pencil I’ve ever owned. I hate to have to use a wooden pencil when I have this around. The release button to advance lead is part of the barrel, so lead is seldom advanced accidentally. Every detail of this pencil seems to be well-engineered and intelligently throught through.
