Phoenix Hit by Dust Storm

A huge dust storm blew through downtown Phoenix, Arizona, at sunset on Tuesday night. Visibility was reduced to nearly zero in Phoenix and its suburbs.

Airline flights were halted and power was knocked out to almost 10,000 people. Swimming pools were made muddy and cars were caked with dirt.

Dust storms are hard to predict, and the large storm hitting Phoenix Tuesday night took everyone by surprise.

The storm, estimated by sme to be 100 miles wide, turned the sky nearly black and made the city's downtown skyscrapers invisible.  Such storms are often called by the Arabic term "haboobs." Some images are available at the link below.
