Very Thin Solar Cells Are In Development

Solar cells so thin that spider silk is thicker were unveiled April 4 by Japanese and Austrian researchers – cells so thin they could be wrapped around a human hair. The French Press Agency (AFP) reported this news from the online Nature Communications journal. The cells are very thin and elastic as well, Tsuyoshi Sekitani, one of the researchers, said.
"The research was done jointly by Martin Kaltenbrunner, Siegfried Bauer and other researchers from Johannes Kepler University of Austria as well as Sekitani and other contributors from University of Tokyo.

"Sekitani said it was possible to make the cells bigger.

"Power generation by solar cells increases with their size. As this device is soft, it is less prone to damage by bending even if it gets bigger," he said.
Sekitani revealed the team wants to increase the rate of conversion from sunlight to electricity and make it practical in about five years.
